Photo Gallery: Korea - Land of the Morning Calm

South Korea is an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. It shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. The country however, has a lot on offer for the keen traveller interested in ancient culture and traditions. It is well known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees, ancient Buddhist temples, coastal fishing villages, sub-tropical islands and high-tech cities such as the capital Seoul.

The country is a land of ancient ruins, romantic legends, natural wonders and extraordinary landscapes. While today most towns and cities are modern, they still offer old alleyways and street markets just as it used to be one hundred of years ago.

Seoul the capital has a number of historic sites, such as the Joseon-era Gyeongbokgung Palace, 'The Great South Gate' of Namdaemun and Seodaemun Prison, hidden amongst offices and shopping centres.

Busan the second largest city after Seoul is a dynamic port city with a laid back atmosphere. It has superb beaches, scenic cliffs and mountains, the grassy burial mounds of ancient kings in Gyeongj and the Seokbulsa Temple carved out of a rock.

Jeju Island is Korea’s largest sub-tropical island located off the south coast. It boasts a treasure chest of tourist attractions including many spectacular geographical features such as the Hallasan Volcano, beautiful beaches, impressive waterfalls and fauna. Its culture, traditions and dialect are also remarkably different to those of the mainland.
